A number of students will be volunteering to partake in the Deafblind Literacy Project over the next number of weeks in SMI.
The Deafblind Literacy Project is one of 55 chosen by the Toy Show Appeal through the Community Foundation for Ireland.
The project aim is to adapt/alter or create a book, nursery rhyme, a recipe, or even an instruction manual that depicts daily tasks.
Most children have access to many books and resources at home and at school. A child who is deafblind may have limited books to choose from which impacts their literacy and social awareness skills. Through this project we hope to increase learning, communication and personal development amongst children who are deafblind, while also fostering a sense of social concern and understanding in students who are volunteering their time.
The completed books will be given to an allocated school which supports these students or to a library that's involved in the project.
Training for this project took place with the Anne Sullivan Foundation today.
